For the first time, biochar buyers have a third option. 

Distributed biochar is produced in enclosed, IoT-monitored kilns at community scale. It is now certifiable under an Isometric module, held to the same MRV and permanence requirements as industrial biochar. 

The catch: quality varies enormously across the projects now entering the market, and the questions that separate a strong project from a weak one aren't the ones most buyers know to ask.

Ikarus Janzen is the Chief Commercial Officer and Co-Founder of Varaha, the leading carbon removal company in Asia. He leads all commercial efforts, including project financing, marketing, sales, and equity fundraising. Before Varaha, he launched one of the first climate tech venture capital funds, investing in transformative startups across energy, mobility, fintech, and carbon markets. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration & Electrical Energy Technology from RWTH Aachen University.

Dr Genevieve Hodgins holds an EngD in Carbon Capture and Storage and Cleaner Fossil Energies from the University of Nottingham, underlining her expertise in promoting carbon removals and advancing towards net zero. She specializes in carbon capture, waste management, and environmental sustainability and joined the Supercritical team in 2024 after successfully managing the GGR-D Biochar Demonstrator, the UK's largest biochar field trial, at the University of Nottingham that explored biochar's potential for carbon sequestration, soil health improvement, and ecosystem services across various UK sites. Additionally, she led the biochar production work package for the West Sussex County Council Greenprint project, and contributed to the PEF Paludiculture Biochar project and the University of Nottingham Biowaste-to-Biochar project.

Rob Brown is a Carbon Removal Scientist at Isometric, where he leads the development of biochar carbon-removal protocol and works across digital MRV, scientific review, and carbon durability and quantification. He holds a PhD in Soil and Environmental Science from Bangor University and brings seven years of research experience in biogeochemistry, including from work on the UKRI-funded GGR-D Biochar Demonstrator Project.
